many packges are not included by default in texlive.
To install the extra packages use the following command
sudo apt-get install texlive-latex-extra

The unfortunate part is the default tex distribution included in ubuntu repository is texlive 2009, which is supposedly outdated. Texlive 2012 is already out. !!!
